I love my husband. He is my best friend and we have been happily married for 10 years and more in love than ever.
Our secret? We are intentional with our time together. We don’t take each other for granted and strive to build our friendship stronger. This is not always easy and does take work, sacrifice, and compromise.
One thing we have learned to do is to make “Date Night” a priority. This can be hard with children of any age.
First you have to make the time. We schedule at least 2 nights a month to have a leisurely quality time with each other. We strive to have 3-4 nights a month, but some months are harder than others to have more than an hour or two of date time.
Next, we get creative. While getting dressed up and going out is always fun, it is hard to do that all the time. Never mind the expense of going out, but then there is the issue of finding a babysitter. We are fortunate that while we don’t live close to relatives who can baby-sit, we have traded children with our close friends. We take their kids one night and then they take ours. This is a beautiful, wonderful thing. However, this is not happening more than once a month at most, so what do we do when we don’t have a “free” sitter and don’t want to pay?
That is where we truly have to get creative and have in home date nights. I love these nights. They start by putting the kids to bed a bit early and explaining that we need some time to enjoy just Mommy and Daddy. Now that the kids are a bit older, we turn it into a fun night for them by letting them have a sleep over and use a portable DVD/TV to watch a movie on. They think it is a treat as much as we do.
Then we either get dressed up and enjoy take-out over candle light or a fancy dinner we have prepared ourselves. Sometimes we are in sweats playing board games and eating popcorn and smoothies. Or we cuddle and watch a movie together. The options are endless.
The important thing is that we make a point to each other and to our children that our marriage is important. It takes work that we are willing to do to keep it strong.
