Like many of you, my morning does not go well without a cup of coffee. While I don't like my coffee black, I am not a fan of store-bought creamers for many reasons. They are often loaded with added preservatives, sugar, stabilizers, carrageenan, and even trans fat.

And if you need a dairy-free creamer, your options are limited and they are often pricey!

Skip the store-bought creamer, and with just 3 ingredients and a quick shake, you can quickly make a dairy-free creamer that is rich, velvety, and full of vanilla and coconut flavors with a note of maple in the background. It is the perfect way to indulge without indulging at all.

Notes on Ingredients

Because this homemade coffee creamer is made with only 3 ingredients, you want to choose them wisely for the best results.

  • Coconut Milk: Be sure to use canned coconut milk, not coconut cream for this vegan coffee creamer. My favorite is Trader Joe's Coconut Milk, it is thicker than most light brands but does not separate as much as full-fat coconut milk. However, you can use any brand of light coconut milk or full-fat coconut milk you like.
  • Maple Syrup: Be sure to use pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup, as the flavor will not be as rich or pure.
  • Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract is optional, but adds a nice warming note to the creamer.
  • Optional Additions: Feel free to add up to a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or ½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg for additional flavoring if desired.

How To Prepare & Use Homemade Coffee Creamer

  • Combine the coconut milk, maple syrup, and vanilla extract in a jar with a tight-fitting lid or a blender. Shake or blend well until the ingredients are well emulsified.
  • Store this homemade creamer in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 14 days.
  • Shake well before each use.

Coconut Vanilla Coffee Creamer

Three simple ingredients come together to create a rich, flavorful, dairy-free coffee creamer.

Ingredients 

  • 1 (15 ounce) can coconut milk, full-fat or reduced-fat
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions 

  • Place all ingredients in a large sealable jar and seal. Shake well for 2-3 minutes, until all the ingredients are well distributed. Alternatively, blend the ingredients until creamy and smooth.
  • Store the creamer in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 14 days. Use as desired, shaking well before each use.

Coconut Milk: Be sure to use canned coconut milk, not coconut cream or refrigerated coconut milk. My favorite is Trader Joe's Coconut Milk--it is thicker than most light brands but does not separate as much as full-fat coconut milk. Feel free to use any brand of light coconut milk or full-fat coconut milk you like.
Optional Additions: Feel free to add up to 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and/or ½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg for additional flavor. Be sure to give a good shake before using, because coconut milk is so thick it needs to be shaken well to distribute properly.
If you are looking to make a dairy version of homemade Vanilla Coffee Creamer, use half-and-half in place of the coconut milk.

  1. I'm curious how this is Whole30 approved with the maple syrup? I am starting my Whole30 journey soon but the "NO List" contains maple syrup. My biggest fear is not having my coffee in the morning b/c I cannot drink black coffee. This recipe sounds great but not sure if it is really Whole30 approved like it says on Pintrest.

    1. I am so sorry that the description on Pinterest misled you--someone easily could have saved it stating it was whole30. Maple syrup is NOT whole30 approved. You can omit the sweetener and then you can use.

  2. Just got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I was worried what I'd do with my coffee being a mom of boys I need my cup but, can't do black coffee. Found your recipe and happened to have all the ingredients. It taste so good and I'm so happy. Can't wait to try more of your recipes. Not being able to have sugar, processed creamers or dairy is not gonna bring down my coffee days!

    can the coconut milk be refrigerated before blending? (That's where I store my coconut milk for other recipes)

    1. Yes absolutely. Just keep in mind the fat solids will rise to the top of the canned coconut milk and will need thoroughly blended. Always store in the refrigerated once the canned is open 🙂

    2. I made this and it’s delicious, just in the fridge it gets thick like pudding and I can’t pour it I have to literally spoon it out lol. Just wondered why 🤷‍♀️ I did use canned coconut milk.

      1. Hi Julie! Did you happen to use canned coconut cream vs coconut milk? You can blend the ingredients to keep it smooth, but it should not turn to pudding consistency.

    Very easy and the flavor/sweetness is just right. It is a good thickness but just isn’t quite the same consistency when stirred in coffee and the fat tends to separate on the top. But the best homemade option I’ve tried and a good substitute when I run out of nondairy creamer.

    1. I am glad you enjoy the flavor! As for the separation, be sure to blend well before storing and then mix well before adding to your coffee. I hope that helps.

      My fiancé and I have used coconut cream for over a year in our coffee. The best ways we have found to get it mixed in is one of those milk foamer things like a tiny immersion blender or what I do is put the coffee in a tumbler and shake it up.

    1. Hi Mandy! It sounds like you may not have mixed your coconut milk well to emulsify before adding the other ingredients. You really want smooth, creamy coconut milk so that the fat and the liquid are combined and the resulting product is not oily. I would suggest blending your canned coconut milk if you have this issue. Hope that helps!
