How to Make Homemade Hot Fudge

The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the ingredient quantities and detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step One: Melt Chocolate Chips

You can opt to melt your chocolate chips with sweetened condensed milk in a heat-safe bowl in the microwave in 30-second intervals or in a small saucepan with equal results.

Step Two: Thin Out Hot Fudge Sauce

Once the chocolate chips have melted into the sweetened condensed milk, it is time to enhance the flavor of the hot fudge and thin the sauce to make it pourable. Stir in the vanilla, butter, salt, and 2 tablespoons of cream. Add up to 3 additional tablespoons of cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, until your hot fudge reaches a thick sauce-like consistency.

Step Three: Serve Warm

Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce is best served warm immediately after preparation, as it will begin to harden as it cools.

Storage Instructions

  • Store: Let the hot fudge cool slightly and then transfer to a heat-safe jar or container. Refrigerate for up to 3 weeks.
  • Reheat: Scoop out however many servings of hot fudge sauce needed into a heat-safe bowl or jar, rewarm slowly in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds, until pourable.

Hot Fudge Sauce

Servings: 12
Cook: 5 minutes
Total: 5 minutes
Bowl of vanilla ice cream drizzled with hot fudge sauce.
Make thick and creamy hot fudge sauce in just 5 minutes using 6 simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream, + more to thin

Instructions

  • Add 1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk and 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips to a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate chips are melted. This will take 3-5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, ⅛ teaspoon sea salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 3 tablespoons heavy cream. If needed, add additional heavy cream to thin.
  • Serve warm or allow to cool for storage.

Notes

Chocolate: I recommend using a good quality brand of chocolate or chocolate chips (such as Ghirardelli), for the richest results. If using a bar of chocolate, be sure to chop into small pieces before melting.
Storage: Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks. Rewarm slowly in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds, until pourable.
