Homemade Fudgesicles are the ultimate rich and creamy frozen treat! And this Fudgesicle recipe allows you to make the BEST-tasting fudgesicles with just a handful of ingredients! I even include a modification for dairy-free fudgesicles!
One of my all-time favorite summer treats as a child was a Fudgesicle. Rich, creamy, and full of chocolate, this chocolate-lover begged her mom to buy this treat when the temperatures began to rise.
Fast-forward 30 years or so (yes, I am THAT old!), I still enjoy Fudgesicles. But just like Drumstick Ice Cream Cones, I prefer Homemade Fudgesicles. My recipe yields a Fudgesicle that is rich, creamy, and full of chocolate. A million times better than a store-bought fudge pop.
Reasons to Love Homemade Fudgesicles
- The Best Fudgesicle. Made with a rich homemade chocolate pudding and light and fluffy whipped topping, these Homemade Fudgesicles are richer, creamier, and more chocolate forward than the store-bought variety.
- Simple Recipe. Even though this recipe for fudgesicles starts with homemade chocolate pudding, this frozen treat is really easy to make. In fact, it is a fun dessert for kids to make themselves.
- Dairy-Free Option. The first time I attempted to make homemade fudgesicles was shortly after discovering my son had a dairy-allergy. I wanted to see if I could make him one of my favorite treats without dairy, and I succeeded! I have included modifications so that you can easily make these Fudgesicles with dairy, without dairy, egg-free, vegan-friendly, corn-free or nut-free. Everyone deserves to enjoy this sweet treat!
- The Ultimate Summer Treat. From Fudgesicles to Watermelon Granita to Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream to Drumstick Ice Cream Cones, there is nothing better than cooling down on a hot day with frozen treat.
Ingredients for Homemade Fudgesicles
Homemade Fudgesicles are made with a simple homemade chocolate pudding and whipped topping or stabilized whipped cream. I have included modifications in the recipe notes, so that you can make these fudgesicles dairy-free, corn-free, nut-free, and egg-free if needed.
- Chocolate Pudding Base: The homemade chocolate pudding is made with milk, cornstarch (or tapioca starch), sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and chocolate chips to create a rich, creamy, decadent Fudgesicle. I recommend using whole milk or canned coconut milk for the best results.
- Whipped Topping: Cool Whip, So Delicious Cocowhip, or Truwhip are all great options for this recipe. You can also use the stabilized version of homemade whipped cream for a truly from-scratch treat.
How to Make Homemade Fudgesicles
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Prepare Homemade Chocolate Pudding
Instead of starting this process with a box of chocolate pudding, this recipe starts with a rich chocolate pudding made with both cocoa powder and chocolate chips. It is rich, creamy, super simple to prepare, and makes the absolute best base for these fudge pops.
Fold in Whipped Topping
Once the pudding has been set up, you want to combine it with a whipped topping, which will keep the Fudgesicles light and airy.
Freeze Fudgesicles
Once the whipped cream has been folded into the your chocolate pudding, simply pour the mixture into popsicle molds of your choice and freeze until solid.
Dip Mold in Hot Water To Remove Fudgesicle
To remove the Fudgesicle from the popsicle mold, place the popsicle mold under running hot water or in a bowl of hot water for a few seconds. This will allow the pop to slide out of the mold easily.
Allergy-Friendly Modifications
This simple recipe for Fudgesicles creates a delicious, decadent dessert that can also easily be made allergy-friendly by following the following modifications to the ingredients.
- Dairy-Free Fudgesicles: Use canned coconut milk, dairy-free chocolate chips, and So Delicious Cocowhip for a creamy, dreamy, dairy-free Fudge Pop.
- Vegan Fudgesicles: For a vegan-friendly recipe, use non-dairy of choice milk, dairy-free chocolate chips, coconut sugar, and So Delicious Cocowhip.
- Corn-Free Fudgesicles: Replace the cornstarch with arrowroot powder to make the chocolate pudding base. For the whipped topping, do not use Cool Whip, as it contains corn products.
- Nut-Free Fudgesicles: Use regular milk or canned coconut milk and Truwhip. I would also be sure to check labels for cross-contamination.

Homemade Fudgesicles
Ingredients
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder
- ¼ cup sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 2-½ cups milk see notes
- ¼ cup chocolate chips see notes
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whipped topping see notes
Instructions
- Place the chocolate chips in a large mixing bowl and place a fine-mesh strainer over the bowl. Set to the side to strain the pudding after preparation.
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa, sugar, salt, and cornstarch. Slowly whisk in ½ cup of the milk and turn the heat to medium. Whisk constantly until sugar and cocoa are dissolved, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the remaining 2 cups of milk and bring to a gentle boil, whisking constantly. Reduce heat to low and allow the mixture to thicken, which takes about 5 minutes. Be sure to whisk every 30 to 60 seconds to prevent the milk from scalding.
- Remove the pudding from the heat and strain the pudding mixture over the strainer. Add the vanilla extract and stir until the chocolate chips have melted. (Straining is optional, but will ensure a super creamy pudding.)
- Refrigerate chocolate pudding mixture for 15-20 minutes to allow the pudding to set up and cool.
- Once the mixture is cooled, gently fold in whipped topping to incorporate.
- Transfer the mixture to popsicle molds and freeze until solid, which is typically 4 hours.
- To remove a fudgesicle form the mold, place the mold under running hot water for a few seconds.
