Copycat Bang Bang Sauce

Looking for a new dipping sauce that is a super creamy, a bit tangy, and just the right balance of sweet and spicy? You've got to try this bang bang sauce recipe!

Inspired by the dipping sauce served with the popular Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer at Bonefish grill, Bang Bang sauce is one of the easiest sauces to make, yet the taste is perfectly complex.

With mayonnaise acting as the creamy base, the dip is rounded out with sweet chili sauce that adds brightness and sweetness. Finished off with a bit of spice from Sriracha sauce, Bang Bang Sauce hits all the notes you crave in a good sauce.

Happy Cooking! xo Kristen

Notes on Ingredients

Mayonnaise, sriracha, and sweet chili sauce portioned out in small bowls labeled on counter for bang bang sauce.
  • Mayonnaise: Full-fat or reduced fat mayonnaise is best. Fat-free mayo is overly acidic and less creamy, making it not an ideal base for this sauce.
  • Sweet Thai Chili Sauce: With sugar, rice wine vinegar, and Sambal oelek, this Thai-style condiment adds the sweet and tangy element to the sauce. Use store-bought or homemade sweet chili sauce.
  • Sriracha: Made with fermented chilis and garlic, Sriracha sauce is thicker, tangier, and more nuanced than classic cayenne hot sauce, making it the best choice for this dip. Feel free to reduce or increase the amount of Sriracha to control the spice level of the sauce.

Want to Lower the Fat?

I have used plain Greek yogurt in place of the mayonnaise with great success. It cuts down of calories and fat, but is still incredibly creamy and delicious.

Kristen's Key Tip

It takes just a minute or two to combine the ingredients to make Bang Bang Sauce. And while it can be enjoyed right away, it is EVEN better if you let the sauce chill for at least 30 minutes prior to serving. It gives time for the flavors to fully marry together.

Mayonnaise, sweet thai chili sauce, and sriracha mixed together in small mixing bowl.

What to Serve with Bang Bang Sauce

Bang Bang Sauce is the obvious choice for Bang Bang Shrimp, but don't stop there. This zesty, tangy sauce pairs well with so many other dishes.
