Why We Love English Muffin Pizzas

One of my all-time favorite lunches as a child was an English Muffin Pizza. They were a simple recipe that my mom made often for me when I was a child and now they are a favorite quick and easy lunch with my children, along with Pizza Grilled Cheese and French Bread Pizzas. And there are so many reasons for you to love this simple recipe as well!

  • Easy Recipe. This "recipe" is almost too easy to share. But I am always asked for easy, kid-friendly recipes and English Muffin Pizzas are always a hit! So much easier than making homemade pizza with a homemade pizza crust, yet just as delicious!
  • Kid-Friendly Lunch or Snack. Not only do both the big and small kids love these mini pizzas, but English Muffin Pizzas are a great recipe to let the kids help make.
  • Customizable. No more fighting over if you want pepperoni or mushrooms on your pizza. With these English Muffin Pizzas, everyone gets to choose their toppings to enjoy their pizza how they like it.
  • Freezer-Friendly Recipe. Baked English Muffin Pizzas can be frozen and then pulled out of the freezer to pack for a school lunch or to reheat as an after-school snack.
  • Inexpensive. For the cost of a frozen pizza, you can make a large batch of English Muffin Pizzas. And not only will they taste better, but there won't be any questionable ingredients added.

Happy Cooking! xo Kristen

Notes On Ingredients

English muffins, pizza sauce, and shredded cheese on counter.
  • English Muffins: Use whole wheat if you want to add in a serving of whole grains.
  • Seasoned Olive Oil: Brushing the English Muffin with olive oil that has been seasoned with garlic powder and oregano or Italian seasoning, helps to taste and flavor the English Muffin Pizza. While an optional ingredient, it is one I HIGHLY recommend.
  • Pizza Sauce: Your favorite store-bought or homemade pizza sauce.
  • Cheese: Mozzarella cheese is the classic choice for English Muffin Pizzas. I recommend shredding the cheese yourself from a block of mozzarella, as bagged shredded cheese is coated in anti-caking agents. Shredding the cheese yourself will allow the cheese to melt better, but if you want to keep it super easy, use bagged shredded cheese😉
  • Pizza Toppings: If desired, top your English Muffin Pizza with your favorite pizza toppings. Pepperoni, bell peppers, mushrooms, cooked Italian sausage, etc.

How to Make English Muffin Pizzas

While this recipe is incredibly easy, and you can find the detailed instructions in the recipe card, be sure to follow my tips for how to get a perfect crispy "crust" and make the best-tasting English Muffin Pizza.

  1. Season the English muffins. Instead of immediately layering the English muffin with pizza sauce, take the time to season the muffin with olive oil, garlic powder, and oregano. will add the perfect flavor to your mini pizza.
  2. Toast the English muffins. I highly recommend lightly toasting the English muffins before topping them with your sauce and cheese, as this will keep your English Muffin pizzas from getting soggy.

  1. Top as desired. One of the benefits of making these individual pizzas yourself is that each person can top their English Muffin Pizza with the toppings they like. After spreading each muffin with pizza sauce and topping it with shredded mozzarella cheese, add additional pizza toppings such as pepperoni, olive, peppers, sausage, etc.
  2. Bake instead of microwave. Use a toaster oven or oven, rather than a microwave to bake these English Muffin pizzas until the cheese is melted. That will give them a quality "pizza-like" taste, with minimal effort required.

How to Freeze English Muffin Pizzas

I love to make a large batch of these pizzas and then freeze them to pull out for quick after-school snacks, school lunches, or a snack for myself.

  • Bake the English muffin pizzas as directed and allow them to cool fully right on the baking sheet.
  • Place the cooled baking sheet directly into the freezer for 20-30 minutes, or until the pizzas are frozen solid to the touch.
  • Remove the pizzas from the baking sheet and place them in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag.
  • Store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • To reheat from frozen, place the pizzas on a sheet pan and bake at 425℉ for 10 minutes or until warmed through. Alternatively, microwave for 1 minute.

How to Pack in School Lunches

An English Muffin Pizza makes a great option for school lunches, especially when paired alongside a homemade fruit roll-up and/or homemade yogurt tube. The best way to pack in a lunch box is to place a frozen or cold English Muffin Pizza or two into a sandwich bag or lunch container and place it in a lunch box, along with an ice pack. By lunchtime, your child can enjoy a defrosted, albeit cold, pizza muffin.

Cheese: For a smoother melt, I recommend shredding the cheese yourself from a block of mozzarella, as bagged shredded cheese is coated in anti-caking agents.
Storage: Store leftover English Muffin pizzas in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat under the broiler for 2-3 minutes to keep the crust crispy.
Microwave Instructions: If you desire a crisp crust, toast each English Muffin Half in a toaster first. Top the toasted English muffin with pizza sauce and sprinkle with cheese. Add any toppings as desired. Microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute, or until cheese is melted. Allow them to cool slightly before enjoying them.
Freezer Instructions: Once baked as directed, allow the pizzas to cool on the baking sheet. Place the cooled baking sheet directly into the freezer for 20-30 minutes, or until the English muffin pizzas are frozen solid to the touch. Remove the pizzas from the baking sheet and place them in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. Store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. We used to make this when I was a child. I had completely forgotten about them. Made them with my girls this weekend and they loved them.

I understand everyone needs "clicks" for whatever financial reasons. For the love of whatever, just let me print the recipe. This looks like a perfect option. You get one star because I must include name and email, which appears to include nobody having actually making this, myself included.

      1. Hey there! I do not, nor have I ever, required anyone to leave a name or comment to print any recipe. I provide that for free for EVERYONE. Rating this one star is not helpful, given you have not even tried this recipe. Nor is it accurate, as you don't have to leave a name or comment to print as you stated. You do have to leave a name and comment to rate, but that is to try to ensure ratings are not true and prevent spam.

  2. I am using your recipe as a base for breakfast sandwiches. I baked the plain muffins first as directed but with butter. After, I added truffle gouda cheese and cooked like the recipe called for with the tomato sauce and cheese. I then added an egg and a sausage patty. Out of this world. Thanks for giving me a starting point.
