Crispy Air Fryer Gnocchi
My daughter is obsessed with gnocchi. Whether served with a rich Bolognese sauce, slathered with homemade spaghetti sauce, or featured in Instant Pot gnocchi soup, she can't get enough!
And how can you blame her?! Gnocchi is like a cross between a dumpling and pasta and is soft, fluffy, and simply delicious however you serve it. But crispy gnocchi, as a snack? Hmm...
We were inspired to try air-frying, after seeing people raving over pasta chips (cooked pasta that is seasoned and then baked or fried until crispy.) I mean, gnocchi for dinner is delicious. Gnocchi as a crispy, crunchy snack seemed like a genius idea.
And let me tell you, it works! Flavored with parmesan, oregano, and garlic and air-fried until crispy on the outside and crunchy on the inside. WOW! Air-fried gnocchi turns out to be one easy, delicious snack!
Notes on Ingredients and Equipment
- Gnocchi: Use fresh or frozen potato gnocchi for best results. Dried potato gnocchi works as well, but it needs to be cooked and cooled prior to air-frying. I have tried this recipe using sweet potato Gnocchi and cauliflower gnocchi with great results as well.
- Olive Oil: For best results, you will need to use a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil rather than simply using an olive oil cooking spray.
- Parmesan Cheese: Use grated parmesan cheese to season the gnocchi before air frying it. If desired, freshly grate parmesan over the gnocchi after air-frying it.
- Seasonings: Salt, garlic powder, and oregano are my seasonings of choice. Feel free to use Italian seasoning in place of the oregano and/or add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for a heat.
How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Gnocchi
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Season Gnocchi
Toss your fresh or frozen gnocchi (no need to defrost!) with oil, parmesan, and seasonings.
Air Fry Gnocchi
Place the seasoned gnocchi in single layer (it is okay if there is a bit of overlap) in your tray or basket of the air fryer. Air-fry for 5 minutes and shake. Continue to air-fry, shaking every 2 minutes, until crispy and browned. This is anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes depending on if you used fresh or frozen gnocchi.
Serve with Sauce
Serve the air-fried gnocchi warm with marinara sauce, pizza sauce, or spaghetti sauce for a classic pairing. This appetizer is also fabulous served with olive oil bread dip or fondue.
Storage Tips
Air Fried Gnocchi is best served immediately after preparation, so that it stays nice and crispy. Leftovers? Toss them with warm pasta sauce or or gently reheat them in the air fryer.
