Air Fryer Baked Potatoes allows you to enjoy a restaurant-quality baked potato with crispy, seasoned skin, without even turning on the oven!
While I love the simplicity of Instant Pot Baked Potatoes, when I am craving a restaurant-quality baked potato, I turn to this Air Fryer Baked Potatoes recipe.
Just like my recipes for Air Fryer Crispy Potatoes, Air Fryer Potato Skins, Air Fryer Potato Wedges, and Air Fryer French Fries, this recipe for Air Fryer Baked Potatoes is simple and the results are spectacular!
Reasons to Love Air Fryer Baked Potatoes
- No Oven Needed. Making a baked potato in the air fryer is not drastically faster than making a baked potato in the oven. But the air fryer is a great alternative to using an oven in warmer weather or when you simply don't have access to an oven.
- Restaurant-Quality Results. Air Fryer Baked Potatoes rival any restaurant's baked potatoes. The interior is fluffy and tender and the exterior of the potato is crispy and flavorful. I truly get hungry just thinking about how good baked potatoes in the air fryer turn out!
- Easy Recipe. Anyone, at any cooking level can make an impressive baked potato using this simple recipe.
Notes on Ingredients & Equipment
- Potatoes: For baked potatoes, russet potatoes are best, as they have a low moisture content and high starch content which results in a fluffy interior.
- Olive Oil: While optional, I strongly encourage brushing the exterior of the potato with a bit of olive oil to help crisp and flavor the skin of the potato.
- Seasonings: Along with the olive oil, I add kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to the skin of the potato for the ultimate flavor.
- Air Fryer: This recipe works with any model of air fryer. I have both an Aria and Ninja air fryer and I highly recommend either.
How To Make Baked Potatoes in the Air Fryer
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step One: Prepare Potatoes. Before seasoning the potatoes, be sure to give them a good scrub and let them air dry. That will ensure your skins are not only free from dirt and debris but drying the potatoes will allow the seasoning to adhere to the skin. Once dried, poke several times with a fork to allow steam to escape, and roll the potatoes in a seasoned olive oil mixture. This seasoning sets these air fryer baked potatoes apart from all other recipes!
Step Two: Air Fry. Place the seasoned potatoes into the air fryer, keeping in mind that you don't want to overcrowd your basket or your tray because you want the air to evenly circulate the potatoes so that the skin gets nice and crispy and the potatoes cook evenly. Cook for 30-50 minutes at 400 degrees F, flipping after 20 minutes. See the chart below for cooking times.
Step Three: Serve. Top your Air Fryer Baked Potato however you like! Butter, sour cream, chives, green onions, cheddar cheese, baked bacon. The options are endless!
∗ Air Fryer Baked Potato Cook Times ∗
The air frying cook time will vary depending on the size of the potato. Therefore, it is best to air fry potatoes that are similar in size to that so they cook evenly. Follow the guidelines below as a starting point, but if your potatoes need a longer cooking time, just return the basket to the air fryer and cook another 3-5 minutes at a time.
- Small Potatoes (~4-5 ounces): Cook for 20 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes or until easily pierced with a knife.
- Medium Potatoes (~6-8 ounces): Cook for 20 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes or until easily pierced with a knife.
- Large Potatoes (~9-11 ounces): Cook for 20 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 20-25 minutes or until easily pierced with a knife.
- Extra Large Potatoes (12-14 ounces): Cook for 25 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 20-25 minutes or until easily pierced with a knife.
Serving Suggestions
We always pair Ribeye Steaks with these Air Fryer Baked Potatoes and a Homemade Caesar Salad, which puts high-end restaurants to shame! However, the options are ENDLESS on how you serve these crispy air-fried baked potatoes. Below are a few options.
- Stuff Air Fryer Baked Potatoes with leftover Instant Pot Pulled Pork, Taco Meat, or Instant Pot Chili and shredded cheese for an easy, filling meal.
- Use these baked potatoes to speed up the process of making Twice Baked Potatoes.
- Dice up cooled baked potatoes and use them to make a quick breakfast hash or as the base for a Potato Frittata.
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate: Allow the air fryer baked potatoes to cool fully and then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Reheat: Microwave one potato at a time on a heat-safe plate for 1 to 2 minutes or reheat in the air fryer at 400 degrees F for 8-10 minutes, or until warmed through.
