Peanut Butter Dog Cookies are the perfect wholesome, homemade treat for your pup. Made with just oats, banana, peanut butter, and egg, these simple dog treats come together in minutes and are loved by dogs of all shapes and sizes.

If your dog is part of the family (and mine absolutely is), you will love spoiling them with these dog cookies and my dog birthday cake. Both use pantry staples and come together with minimal effort.

Key Tips to Know Before Starting

Before you grab a bowl, here are a few small details that make these treats turn out just right for your four-legged friend.

  • Always check with your veterinarian before introducing new foods, especially if your dog has allergies or health concerns.
  • Choose natural peanut butter. Make sure it does not contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs. I prefer using natural peanut butter without added sugar or oils, but it is always best to read the label.
  • Use ripe banana. A soft, spotty banana mashes easily into the other ingredients.
  • Cool completely before storing in the fridge. Trapped steam can make the dog cookies quickly grow mold. Once cooled, store in the refrigerator where they will last up to a week.

How to Make Homemade Dog Cookies

Mix, scoop, bake! It is so easy to make these peanut butter dog cookies!

Step One: Prepare Batter

In a medium bowl, whisk the egg. Add in the banana and peanut butter and mash together until evenly incorporated. Add the oats and mix until combined. The mixture will be thick and slightly sticky, like my banana breakfast cookies.

Step Two: Scoop

Scoop 1 tablespoon batter out onto baking sheet, lined with silicone mat or parchment paper. Flatten slightly with a fork, so that they will bake evenly.

Step Three: Bake

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the treats are set and lightly golden on the bottom.

Let the cookies cool completely and then let your pup enjoy!

Storage Tip

Once cooled fully, store the dog cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. If your kitchen runs warm, refrigeration is the safer option.

You can also freeze the treats in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Homemade dog treats are such a small thing, but they feel special. And when your dog looks at you like you just handed them the greatest gift on earth, it makes the 15 minutes in the kitchen completely worth it.

Notes

Storage: Once cooled, these homemade dog treats can be stored in an airtight container for 3 days at room temperature and for a week in the refrigerator.
Puppy-Friendly Modification: These dog treats are already soft and perfect for puppies, but if desired, use a food processor to blend the oats into an oat flour before adding the other ingredients. The batter won't be as thick, so best to use a mold (like these cute dog bones) and bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes. Let cool in the mold for 5 minutes and then flip out of mold.
Freeze Dog Treats: Allow the treats to cool, place them in an airtight freezer-safe container, and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Pull a treat or two out at a time and let fully defrost at room temperature or in the refrigerator before allowing your dog to enjoy.
Safe for humans as well.

made these. They took 10 min to make, are super simple, but only make 12 and they are soft-> good for dogs with bad or missing teeth. But I prefer crunchier treats for my dogs. These are certainly nutritious. It would be very simple to double the recipe.

  2. Hi, I would love to make this recipe. But, we are having some oven problems so can these be cooked in the microwave? If so how long?

    1. Hi Hammy! I am sorry for your oven issues. I have no experience baking these in the microwave. I would suggest omitting the eggs and making them a no-bake treat for your dog.

    2. There is really no reason to cook these at all. I've fed every dog I've owned (9) raw food only. They all lived past their breed's predicted life span (even I'm shocked by that fact). A raw egg isn't going to hurt fido, in fact, it's better for him. Baking them might make them easier to handle or look cuter to us humans but that's all.

This is an awesome healthy recipe for my dog Jack. Thanks! I like to make things in larger quantities. Can these be frozen? If so, how long will they last? I think they will make really good Christmas gifts too.

I have been making this recipe for over a year now and IT IS STILL A HIT! My babies have definitely gained weight because I make the recipe times 4 and we give them way too many but they just love them SO much and how can you deny their sweet little faces!!!!! Jusy fyi, a ton of other factors play into their weight; for example, Maxi has Addison's disease so he is always hungry due to taking steroids every day; Gumbo has allergies so there are not many treats we CAN give him for a long period of time; and we started giving them wet food because they have gotten older.
As long as you portion correctly per your Babies' weight and do not spoil the crap out of your Babies like we do, they won't gain weight solely due to this treat.
Sissy and Braxi gave this recipe a thumbs up ALSO!! (:
    I have even snacked on many (;
