My Favorite Cherry Smoothie

But unlike a slice of pie, this Cherry Smoothie is naturally sweetened and full of protein, calcium, and nutrients--making it a wholesome option that is suited for a quick breakfast on the go or post-workout snack.

Cherry Smoothie Ingredients

- Cherries: While you can use either fresh or frozen sweet cherries to make this smoothie, I find that I often rely on frozen cherries. They are available year-round, are already pitted for you, and give this smoothie a nice frosty consistency. If using fresh cherries, you may want to use frozen banana chunks to give the smoothie a nice thick, icy texture.
- Greek Yogurt: Yogurt gives this smoothie a rich and creamy consistency, while packing in protein and calcium (just like it does in my Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie.)
- Banana: Ripe bananas will help to sweeten the cherry smoothie naturally and their flavor compliments the natural flavor of the cherries.
- Milk: Use any variety of milk or non-dairy milk you like when making this smoothie.
- Vanilla Extract: The vanilla adds warming, rich undertones to the smoothie.
- Ground Flaxseed (optional): I call it my secret weapon! It will blends undetected into the cherry smoothie, while adding fiber, nutrients, and omega-fatty acids.
Tips for Making a Cherry Smoothie
Making a cherry smoothie is as easy as dump and blend. But there are two important things to remember.
- Start with Liquid Ingredients. Pour the milk into the blender first. This will prevent the blades from getting stuck and allow the smoothie to incorporate easily.
- Serve Right Away. For the best flavor and consistency, this cherry smoothie (like most smoothies) are best enjoyed immediately after preparation.

Put Your Own Spin on It
While I love this cherry smoothie recipe as written, you can opt to vary the ingredients to make the smoothie uniquely yours.
- Adjust the Sweetness: Add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey, 1-2 pitted dates, or use vanilla Greek yogurt instead of plain.
- Dairy-Free: Use non-dairy milk or tart cherry juice and non-dairy yogurt.
- Cherry Boost: Replace half (or all) of the milk with tart cherry juice.
- Using Tart Cherries: Sweeten with a bit of honey or maple syrup.
- Add Nut Butter: For added richness, add 1-2 tablespoons of nut butter.
- Swap out the Yogurt for Cottage Cheese. As my cottage cheese smoothie proves, the cottage cheese adds a slight tangy undertone-almost like a cherry cheesecake, while keeping the smoothie high in protein and calcium.
- Cherry Almond Smoothie: Use almond milk, skip vanilla extract, add ⅛ teaspoon almond extract, and up to 1 tablespoon almond butter.
- Chocolate Cherry Smoothie: Add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of honey to balance the the natural bitterness of the cocoa.
- Add a Topping: Top your smoothie with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and/or granola. Just don't forget cherry on top!😉
