This Smoothie Made Me Famous

While recipes like Cheesy Chicken and Rice, Instant Pot Chicken Breast, and Baked Meatballs may be the ones readers come back for, this Pina Colada Smoothie is the one my family and friends won't let me show up without.

I've been making this for years -- usually alongside taco night (it pairs surprisingly well with Ground Beef Tacos or Instant Pot Chicken Tacos). And every single time, someone asks, wait, how did you make this taste so good?

The answer is simple: real ingredients that do the work for you. Sweet pineapple, tangy orange juice, creamy coconut milk, and banana blend into something that tastes like a treat, and so much fresher than you get at a tropical resort or local restaurant.

Serve it as or add a splash of coconut rum for the adults. Either way, it's one of those recipes that makes an ordinary day feel just a little more fun.

Happy Cooking! xo Kristen

Kristen's Keys for the Best Pina Colada Smoothie

This smoothie comes together in minutes, but a few small details make the difference between good and make you look like you know what you are doing.

  • Start with the liquids first. Pour in your juice and coconut milk before adding the banana. This helps the blender blades move freely and prevents everything from getting stuck (and nobody has time to stop and scrape down the blender).
  • Use frozen banana for the best texture. This is the key to a naturally sweet smoothie with a thick, creamy, consistency. If you are opposed to pineapple, frozen pineapple chunks work well here.
  • Customize for your crew. Blend one batch, then add coconut rum to individual glasses if desired. Just give it a quick stir so everything is evenly mixed.

Serving Suggestions

We may not be sitting on a beach (most days I'm just trying to keep up with the kitchen), but this smoothie brings a little of that feeling home. It's especially perfect alongside bold, flavorful meals, like taco night or anything with a little spice. Below are a few of my favorites!

  • 1 cup canned coconut milk, light or full fat
  • 2 medium frozen bananas, broken into chunks for easier blending
  • coconut rum, *optional

Notes

Rum: Completely optional. I typically make the smoothies without alcohol and then add 1.5 ounces of coconut rum per drink when desired. To add rum to the entire batch, add 6 ounces (or  ¾ cup) of rum to the mixture before blending.
Not a fan of bananas? Replace them with frozen chunks of pineapple.
