Kristen's Keys for a Refreshing Kale Smoothie

This kale smoothie is incredibly simple to make, but a few small choices make a big difference in how smooth and balanced the final drink tastes.

  • Add liquids to the blender first. Starting with the thin liquid gives the blender blades room to move freely, which helps everything blend faster and prevents ingredients from getting stuck underneath the blades.
  • Balance fresh and frozen fruit. Using both fruits frozen can make the smoothie too thick, especially in a standard blender. Use one frozen fruit and one fresh fruit to create a smoothie that is thick but still easy to blend.
  • Remove the stem from the kale. Unless you have a high-powered blender, it is VERY unlikey your blender can break down tht is so woody an
  • Drink the smoothie shortly after blending. Kale can develop a slightly bitter taste if it sits too long. This smoothie tastes best within about 30 minutes of blending.

How to Make a Kale Smoothie

This smoothie is as easy as placing everything into the blender and blending well. Just remember to start with the liquids.😉

  1. Add the coconut milk and pineapple juice to the base of the blender.
  2. Add chunks of pineapple and banana on top of the coconut milk.
  3. Remove the stems from the kale, then pop it into the blender as well.
  4. Blend on high speed until smooth and the kale is completely broken down and blended into the smoothie. If you have a less powerful blender, you may need to stop every minute and push down the fruit and blend again.

Recipe Modifications

  • Add Protein: Add a scoop of plain or vanilla protein powder or a few tablespoons of Greek yogurt.
  • Make it Sweeter: If your pineapple isn't very sweet, add 1-2 teaspoons of honey or maple syrup.
  • Swap the Greens: Baby spinach can be used instead of kale for an even milder flavor.

Notes

The nutrition values are based on using full-fat coconut milk.
Coconut Milk: Canned is best in terms of flavor. Either low-fat or full-fat canned coconut milk works in this smoothie recipe.
Pineapple: Fresh or frozen bananas or pineapple can be used. I do not recommend canned pineapple.
Kale: Feel free to use spinach in place of kale. And baby kale is best--it breaks down easier.

Following your recipe, my husband whipped this up in the kitchen for us before we poured it into insulated cups and headed downstairs to the beach. Wow, was it delicious!
