Irresistibly Crispy Air Fryer Gnocchi

My daughter is obsessed with gnocchi. Whether served with a rich Bolognese sauce, slathered with homemade spaghetti sauce, or featured in Instant Pot chicken gnocchi soup, she can't get enough!

And how can you blame her?! Gnocchi is like a cross between a dumpling and pasta and is soft, fluffy, and simply delicious however you serve it. But crispy gnocchi, as a snack? Hmm...

We were inspired to try air-frying, after seeing people raving over pasta chips (cooked pasta that is seasoned and then baked or fried until crispy.) I mean, gnocchi for dinner is delicious. Gnocchi as a crispy, crunchy snack seemed like a genius idea.

And let me tell you, it works! Flavored with parmesan, oregano, and garlic and air-fried until crispy on the outside and crunchy on the inside. WOW! Air-fried gnocchi turns out to be one easy, delicious snack!

Happy Cooking! xo Kristen

Notes on Ingredients and Equipment

Ingredients for air fryer gnocchi labeled on counter.
  • Gnocchi: Use fresh or frozen potato gnocchi for best results. Dried potato gnocchi works as well, but it needs to be cooked and cooled prior to air-frying to achieve the best texture. I have tried this recipe using sweet potato Gnocchi and cauliflower gnocchi with delicious results.
  • Olive Oil: For best results, you will need to use a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil rather than simply using an olive oil cooking spray.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Use grated parmesan cheese to season the gnocchi before air frying it. If desired, freshly grate parmesan over the gnocchi after air-frying it.
  • Seasonings: Salt, garlic powder, and oregano are my seasonings of choice. Feel free to use Italian seasoning in place of the oregano and/or add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for a heat.

How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Gnocchi

The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the ingredient quantities and detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Season Gnocchi. Toss your fresh or frozen gnocchi (no need to defrost!) with oil, parmesan, and seasonings.
Bowl with potato gnocchi seasoned with olive oil, garlic powder, parmesan, and oregano.
  1. Air Fry Gnocchi. Place the seasoned gnocchi in single layer (it is okay if there is a bit of overlap) in your tray or basket of the air fryer. Air-fry for 5 minutes and shake. Continue to air-fry, shaking every 2 minutes, until crispy and browned. This is anywhere from 5 minutes for fresh gnocchi to 10 minutes for frozen gnocchi.

  1. Serve with Sauce. Serve the air-fried gnocchi warm with marinara sauce, pizza sauce, or spaghetti sauce for a classic pairing. My personal favorite is serving gnocchi with olive oil bread dip, but fondue is delicious as well.

Kristen's Tip

Leftover Air Fryer Gnocchi?

Air Fried Gnocchi is best served immediately after preparation, so that it stays nice and crispy. If you happen to have leftovers, I recommend gently reheating them in the air fryer.

Notes

Gnocchi: Use fresh or frozen potato gnocchi, cauliflower gnocchi, or sweet potato gnocchi.
Note on Shelf-Stable Gnocchi: If using dried gnocchi, it need to be cooked according to package directions and then cooled before seasoning and air-frying for best results.
Oil: Feel free to decrease the oil to 1 teaspoon, but the oil does work better than olive oil cooking spray for this recipe.
Storage: Air-fried gnocchi is best served immediately after preparing. If you happen to have leftovers, store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and  reheat it at 350℉ for 3-5 minutes just to warm through, or toss with warm pasta sauce and serve.

We used the refrigerated gnocchi and dipped them in ranch dressing. So good! I can't wait to get to the store to make them again.
