Made with only 6 ingredients and in 15 minutes, this recipe for Instant Pot Smoked Sausage with Potatoes is the definition of a fast family dinner!
While the ingredients in this recipe for Instant Pot Sausage and Potatoes are humble, the results are delicious. Between the soft, flavorful potatoes, the spicy, hearty sausage, and the super tender green beans, this meal is hearty, economical, and a true family favorite.
This recipe for Instant Pot Kielbasa and Potatoes was inspired by my childhood. I grew up in an area with a lot of Polish influence, and so there was a lot of kielbasas, or polish smoked sausage, used in recipes.
My grandparents would make a simple dish using either ham, potatoes, and green beans, or kielbasa, potatoes, and green beans. It was simmered for hours on the stove or in the slow cooker until the potatoes and green beans were super soft and absorbed all the rich flavor from the sausage.
I took that recipe and sped up the process. Now in less than 20 minutes, the magic of the Instant Pot delivers this Polish comfort food. It is rich, creamy, flavorful and so incredibly easy to make.
Notes on Ingredients
- Kielbasa: Kielbasa is a polish smoked sausage. You can use any smoked sausage you like. I use an organic beef smoked sausage that is free from nitrates, preservatives, and MSG. However, you can use any variety of smoked sausage you like.
- Potatoes: Russet, red, or Yukon Gold potatoes can be used. There is no need to peel the potatoes. Simply scrub and chop into 1.5-2 inch cubes.
- Green Beans: My grandparents used canned green beans for this recipe, and so that is what I use. It keeps this recipe super simple to make. Plus that means there is no cleaning and chopping of fresh green beans which is a huge time saver. But feel free to use fresh trimmed green beans in place of the canned beans.
- Chicken Stock: Use low-sodium store-bought chicken broth/stock, homemade chicken stock, or Instant Pot Chicken Stock. While you can use water in place of stock, the stock adds more flavor to the completed dish.
- Cajun Seasoning: I find that a Cajun blend of spices adds just the right flavor to potatoes and pairs well with the smoked sausage. I use homemade Cajun seasoning, but you can use your favorite store-bought brand or seasoned salt in its place.
- Onions: The onions are totally optional, but do add a bit of flavor to this dish. Feel free to omit them if desired.
Recipe Modifications
- Make it EVEN Quicker! This is a really easy and fast recipe, but if you are really in a time crunch, I suggest skipping sauteing the sausage. I love the crispy texture the sauteing adds to this dish, but it is completely unnecessary.
- Lower the Sodium. To control the level of sodium, use low-sodium broth or stock, rinse the canned green beans or use no-salt-added canned beans, and omit the salt or cut in half the amount of salt in the homemade Cajun seasoning.
- Use Ham: Replace the sliced sausage with 2-3 cups of diced ham to make a dish reminiscent of Potatoes and Green Beans with Ham
How to Make Instant Pot Smoked Sausage and Potatoes
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Sauté Sausage with Onion: Sauté the kielbasa and onions in a bit of oil using the sauté function for 2-3 minutes or until the sausage begins to get crispy and browned and the onion softens.
- Deglaze Inner Pot. Add in the stock and scrape up the browned bits on the bottom of the inner pot. This is a crucial step to preventing a burn notice.
- Layer Ingredients. Add potatoes, Cajun seasoning, and drained green beans on top of the sausage.
- Pressure Cook. Set cook time for 2 minutes on high pressure. Note: If you want your potatoes JUST fork tender, but still somewhat firm, set cook time for only 1 minute. Let the pressure release naturally for at least 5 minutes before doing a quick release of pressure.
- Serve. Open up the pressure cooker, give everything a stir, and serve.

I added a layer of chopped green cabbage between the meat and the potatoes and then used fresh green beans. I didn't change the time at all and it turned out perfect.
Kristen Chidsey
Thanks for sharing, Melie!

Made this when I didn’t have enough green beans and just used whatever I had in my Mom’s pantry while I visited over the holidays. Used corn and green beans with the potatoes sprinkled with a little Slap Yo Mama and it was delicious.
Kristen Chidsey
Fabulous! Thank you for sharing your modifications. I love hearing you enjoyed.

I’m still getting used to the instant pot. I couldn’t believe how tender the potatoes were after only two minutes! Next time I will try one minute. Really tasty!
Kristen Chidsey
YAY! I am so happy to hear you enjoyed! You will love how fast the IP cooks! Reach out with any questions.

Yeah I'm gonna 5 star this, and my apologies for not leaving a review sooner. I am not a cook. I burn cereal. I've only recently started "instant potting" and this is one of my go-tos. Not only is it super simple but it's absolutely delightful. I've memorized this recipe which is a big step for me, and grandpa LOVES it. Thank you so much!
Kristen Chidsey
Well thank you so much for leaving a review now, James! I am so happy to hear is a favorite with you and your grandpa!
Nicole
Hello love your recipes if I wanted to do chicken sausage how would I adjust the time? I was thinking about following the time of your sausage and pepper recipe because that came out perfect but not sure about the potatoes.
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Nicole! Thank you for your compliment. I love hearing you enjoy my recipes! I have made this before with precooked Turkey Sausage (like alFresco brand) and it worked great. If using potatoes and green beans, I would use the cooking time for THIS reicpe. The sausage and peppers is a bit too long for the green beans, but helps to develop that rich red sauce 🙂
Nicole
I made this using chicken sausage. This was AMAZING!!!! Adding this to my favorites. I used the time for the sausage peppers since they were raw sausages and it came out perfect. I love how you perfected the instant pot times which I know is not easy to do.
Kristen Chidsey
So happy to hear you enjoyed so much, Nicole! And I especially love hearing this Instant Pot Sausage and Potatoes will become a regular at your house.
Courtney
My family and I love this recipe. I'm trying it with frozen green beans tonight because my canned beans are "missing". Hoping it's still as good.
Kristen Chidsey
It should still be delicious! I hope you enjoy it!
Gloria
I live this recipe. I don't really like green beans, so I was skeptical, but this is delicious! I could eat it every week. And so fast!
Kristen Chidsey
So happy to hear you enjoy this Instant Pot recipe so much Gloria--even with the green beans 😉

Super easy delish recipe!!! Thanks so much

If I want to add mushrooms do I sauté them with the onion and sausage or throw in with the potatoes?
Kristen Chidsey
I would saute them with the onions for the best flavor and texture 🙂
Jillian
This was so good and so easy! I can’t stop eating it. This will go into our weeknight rotation. Thanks
Kristen Chidsey
So happy to hear this will be a weekly staple 🙂
Holly
Can I use fresh green beans? I wasn’t sure if it would be the same amount of time?
Kristen Chidsey
Absolutely! The cooking time will remain the same.
Sam
This looks and sounds delicious! Can I use Frozen green beans instead of canned? If so, would I have to change any of the preparation?
Kristen Chidsey
I would let your green beans defrost in the fridge or run then under cold water and then proceed with the recipe as directed.
Jackie
I never used my instant pot before this recipe was so fast and easy thank you! I added a few things to it I’ll probably make this a go to. It took me like no time at all the sauté and the pressure cook was quick
Donna Schafer
If using fresh green beans, is 2 minutes enough cook time? I'm making this tomorrow. TIA
Kristen Chidsey
Yes! Trimmed fresh green beans will cook in the 2 minutes. Enjoy!

This was really good! My husband bragged on this asking where I found the recipe. I only had sausage in my fridge & a clean kitchen, so I wanted to keep the mess to a minimum😆The potatoes were creamy from the broth & flavorful. I ended up cooking longer than a couple minutes due to my pressure cooker not sealing correctly, but it was still fine. Definitely making again. I’d say it’s pretty budget friendly also!
Kristen Chidsey
I love that you made this to keep your kitchen clean--That sounds like something I would say! The bonus is you loved it! Thanks for sharing.

Simple and delicious
chuck stumpf
did you have to blanch the beans before adding to the instant pot ?
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Chuck! No need to blanch the beans, just add to the inner pot after trimming.

I have made this recipe several times and it’s one of the very few recipes my entire family will eat. Thank you for sharing!
