Kielbasa and Potatoes Made Fast!

This recipe for Instant Pot Smoked Sausage and Potatoes was inspired by a childhood favorite--kielbasa and potatoes.
This humble dish, rooted in Polish tradition, was something my grandparents often made. Smoked sausage, potatoes, and green beans were simmered in a rich broth until everything was tender and full of flavor. It was simple, hearty, and incredibly comforting.
I've taken that same recipe and sped up the process using the Instant Pot. Now, instead of hours, this one-pot meal is on the table in less than 20 minutes--and it's just as comforting and delicious as the original!
Happy Cooking! xo Kristen
Recipe Highlights
Notes on Ingredients

- Smoked Sausage: Use any variety of smoked sausage or kielbasa you like. I even love using smoked chicken sausage to make this quick dinner.
- Potatoes: Russet, red, or Yukon Gold potatoes all work well. There is no need to peel the potatoes. Simply scrub and chop.
- Green Beans: To keep the recipe super simple and affordable, I typically make this recipe using canned green beans, just as my grandparents did. However, you can opt to use fresh trimmed green beans if you like.
- Chicken Stock: Use low-sodium store-bought chicken broth or stock to control the level of sodium. (Homemade chicken stock or Instant Pot chicken stock are both great options.)
- Cajun Seasoning: For added flavor that pairs well with the kielbasa use store-bought or homemade Cajun seasoning.
- Onions: Adding a white or yellow onion adds additional flavor, but are optional. Feel free to omit them if desired or if you don't have them on hand.
How to Make Instant Pot Smoked Sausage and Potatoes
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the ingredient quantities and detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Sauté Sausage with Onion. Sauté the kielbasa and onions in a bit of oil using the sauté function for 2-3 minutes or until the sausage begins to get crispy and browned and the onion softens.

- Deglaze Inner Pot. Add in the stock and scrape up the browned bits on the bottom of the inner pot. This is a crucial step to preventing a burn notice.

- Layer Ingredients. Add potatoes, Cajun seasoning, and drained green beans on top of the sausage.

- Pressure Cook. Set cook time for 2 minutes on high pressure. Note: If you want your potatoes JUST fork tender, but still somewhat firm, set cook time for only 1 minute. Let the pressure release naturally for at least 5 minutes before doing a quick release of pressure.
- Serve. Open up the pressure cooker, give everything a stir, and serve.

Recipe Modifications
- Make it EVEN Quicker! This is a really easy and fast recipe, but if you are really in a time crunch, I suggest skipping sauteing the sausage. I love the crispy texture the sauteing adds to this dish, but it is completely unnecessary.
- Lower the Sodium. To control the level of sodium, use low-sodium broth or stock, rinse the canned green beans or use no-salt-added canned beans, and omit the salt.
- Tame the Spice. Replace the Cajun seasoning with seasoned salt and use mild smoked sausage.
- Use Ham: Replace the sliced sausage with 2-3 cups of diced ham to make a dish reminiscent of Crockpot Potatoes with Green Beans and Ham.

Simply amazing! Thank you!
I love hearing that Spencer! Thanks for sharing.
I'm worried that the cajun seasoning might be too much for my 8 year old..any suggestions on other seasoning combinations?
Hi Christine! You can add seasoned salt or simply just salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Enjoy!
Can I use fresh green beans? If so how do I convert the cooking time?
Absolutely! The cooking time will remain the same. Enjoy!
This recipe is one of my family’s go-to meals. We love it! I use canned green beans and Mrs. Dash instead of Cajun seasoning. Also use smoked turkey sausage. Leftovers are great!
Thank you for sharing that, Sherry! I love hearing this is a favorite.
Not only was this a hit in my house a couple of weeks ago, I also took some to my parents to try try as well. Guess what they have requested for me to bring them tonight?...lol. Thank you for a quick and easy and most delicious dinner.
Haven't tried this yet, but it looks tasty. Neither me nor my wife like the taste or texture of canned green beans. However, your notes don't give any "adjustment" if one uses (1) fresh green beans, or, (2) defrosted green beans. I would think that my #2 might come close to canned green beans, but they are raw to begin with. I would appreciate any suggestions.
I DID make your recipe using pineapple juice as the liquid for chicken breasts. It turned out fantastic!
Hi Ed! First of all, so glad you enjoyed my recipe for instant pot chicken breasts 🙂 As for using fresh green beans, the last note in this recipe card states, "By all means, use fresh trimmed green beans in place of the canned beans if that is what you prefer" Easy to miss 🙂 There is no change to time if using fresh green beans, and as long as your frozen green beans are defrosted, those work as well. I hope you enjoy!
My husband is such a picky eater, as well as my 3 year old. Was so happy they both loved this
at the end I added shredded cheddar cheese! And garlic instead of onion so friggin good
Making it tonight
I love hearing that! It is always such a great feeling when the picky eaters are happy
Just made this, but without the cajun spice since we are not into spicy food, I did add garlic when sautéing the sausage. This is SO good. Thank you so much
I am so glad you enjoyed--even without the spice. That's one of the best reasons to cook at home, you can control it!
We had this tonight, and it hit the spot! Made as written and it turned out great. I'll be making it again soon. Thanks for the recipe.
Thanks for Trish! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe.
WOWW!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!
One of my all time favorites now! There is a reason this recipe has 5 stars!!
I used turkey kielbasa and frozen green beans and it turned out immaculate! I can't get over how good this was!!! Thank you!
This is a weekly favorite in my house. It's so easy and everyone loves it! If I wanted to double the recipe, would the times be the same? Or would you suggest doing them separate?
I would keep the cooking time the same. It will just take longer to come to pressure. PS--LOVE hearing you enjoy!
Oh my goodness best recipe ever! My family loved it. I served it with white rice. I pressure cooked it for 3 mins in the IP and all was so tender. The taste is delicious. Did not have Cajun seasoning so used garlic powder.
I am so glad your family enjoyed this recipe Gloria! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
