BBQ Chicken Pizza is one of my favorite pizzas of all time! From the juicy chicken to the sharp onions to the melty cheese to the tangy BBQ sauce, the pizza is sweet, savory, and perfectly satisfying.
It also happens to be one of my favorite leftover rotisserie chicken recipes. With just a small of amount of shredded or diced chicken (or pork) and the addition of your favorite BBQ Sauce, you can transform leftovers into a new and delicious dinner!
Options for Ingredients
- Pizza Dough: Use 1 pound of your favorite store-bought pizza dough or start with my homemade pizza dough recipe.
- Cooked Chicken or Pork: Use any leftover cooked shredded or diced pork or chicken you have on hand. This is a great recipe to use leftover rotisserie chicken, Instant Pot BBQ chicken, grilled barbecue chicken breasts, Instant Pot BBQ pork or Crockpot Pulled Pork.
- BBQ Sauce: In place of pizza sauce, use your favorite sweet and tangy store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce.
- Cheese: For the best flavor and melt factor, use a combination of cheddar and mozzarella. It is also best to shred the cheese yourself, as pre-shredded cheese is coated in anti-caking agents.
- Optional Additions: Thinly sliced red onion and freshly minced cilantro are classic additions, which add incredible flavor to this BBQ pizza. Other ideas would be to add corn kernels or pineapple.
How to Make The Best Homemade BBQ Pizza
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Start with Pizza Dough. Roll the pizza dough out onto a 12-inch pizza pan or pizza stone. You want the crust to be thick enough to support the toppings, but thin enough to let everything shine.
- Season the Meat. If your cooked chicken or pork is not already coated with BBQ sauce, take the time to season it now with a bit of BBQ sauce and garlic powder for additional flavor.
- Top with Care. Spread a thin layer of BBQ sauce out onto the pizza dough. Evenly spread the seasoned meat and sliced red onion around the dough and then top generously with the shredded cheese.
- Bake until Golden. Bake the pizza at a high temperature, until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve with Cilantro. Once the BBQ Pizza has been baked, top with minced cilantro. Sometimes we like to to top it with a swirl of ranch dressing as well.
Storage & Reheating Instructions
- Store: Allow the BBQ Pizza to cool fully and then transfer individual slices into an airtight container, staking between pieces of parchment paper if needed. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Reheat: To reheat the pizza so it stays crispy and gooey, it is best to reheat the pizza in a 325 degree F oven for 10-12 minutes, or until warmed through.
