Whether you use this Homemade Coffee Creamer to make a Homemade Latte, or just to flavor your coffee, this simple dairy-free coffee creamer will save you money and will make drinking your morning cup of coffee that much more enjoyable.

Like many of you, my morning does not go well without a cup of coffee. While I don't like my coffee black, I am not a fan of store-bought creamers for many reasons. They are often loaded with added preservatives, sugar, stabilizers, carrageenan, and even trans fat.

And if you need a dairy-free creamer, your options are limited and they are often pricey!

Skip the store-bought creamer, and with just 3 ingredients and a quick shake, you can quickly make a dairy-free creamer that is rich, velvety, and full of vanilla and coconut flavors with a note of maple in the background. It is the perfect way to indulge without indulging at all.

Notes on Ingredients

Because this homemade coffee creamer is made with only 3 ingredients, you want to choose them wisely for the best results.

  • Coconut Milk: Be sure to use canned coconut milk, not coconut cream for this vegan coffee creamer. My favorite is Trader Joe's Coconut Milk, it is thicker than most light brands but does not separate as much as full-fat coconut milk. However, you can use any brand of light coconut milk or full-fat coconut milk you like.
  • Maple Syrup: Be sure to use pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup, as the flavor will not be as rich or pure.
  • Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract is optional, but adds a nice warming note to the creamer.
  • Optional Additions: Feel free to add up to a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or ½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg for additional flavoring if desired.

How To Prepare & Use Homemade Coffee Creamer

  • Combine the coconut milk, maple syrup, and vanilla extract in a jar with a tight-fitting lid or a blender. Shake or blend well until the ingredients are well emulsified.
  • Store this homemade creamer in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 14 days.
  • Shake well before each use.

not dairy-free?

If you are not dairy-free, feel free to use half and half in place of the coconut milk to make a simple Homemade Vanilla Coffee Creamer.

Total: 3 minutes
Homemade Coffee Creamer being poured into a white coffee mug.
Three simple ingredients come together to create a rich, flavorful, dairy-free coffee creamer.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 ounce) can coconut milk, full-fat or reduced-fat
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a large sealable jar and seal. Shake well for 2-3 minutes, until all the ingredients are well distributed. Alternatively, blend the ingredients until creamy and smooth.
  • Store the creamer in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 14 days. Use as desired, shaking well before each use.

Notes

Coconut Milk: Be sure to use canned coconut milk, not coconut cream or refrigerated coconut milk. My favorite is Trader Joe's Coconut Milk--it is thicker than most light brands but does not separate as much as full-fat coconut milk. Feel free to use any brand of light coconut milk or full-fat coconut milk you like.
Optional Additions: Feel free to add up to 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and/or ½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg for additional flavor. Be sure to give a good shake before using, because coconut milk is so thick it needs to be shaken well to distribute properly.
If you are looking to make a dairy version of homemade Vanilla Coffee Creamer, use half-and-half in place of the coconut milk.

What brand of Coconut Milk do you use? I'd like to use the same because the only one I could find (something at Target, it was literally the only canned coconut milk they carried) did not exactly work out well with the recipe. It tasted AMAZING but the consistency left something to be desired. Yours looks a little creamer and less thick than mine turned out. Overall though I LOVE this recipe! It's way better than any of the coconut creamers you can buy at the store.

    1. Hey Jessica! I am sorry this was not the best consitency for you. I use light coconut milk from Trader Joes. Their brand seems to be able to shake up perfectly and is not too thick. Try to look for a light version of canned coconut milk that dosen't have many additives. Hope this helps!

  3. I made this last night and in the morning (despite much shaking last night and today), my creamer did not look like the picture at all :(. There was a lot of stuff on the side of the glass jar and the contents continue to separate. Also, I didn't taste much in my coffee, I put 3 tablespoons and normally I am a 1 tablespoon of creamer kind of gal. Not sure what I did wrong? The coconut milk was super solid when I got it. Should I try and different brand or type? Would like to try this again.

    1. Cecilia, I am SO sorry this did not work out well for you. It sounds like you used either a very rich coconut milk or coconut cream. I would recommend a refrigerated brand (like Silk) or a Lite Canned Version. If using a canned version, shake contents up well to incorporate before making. And then shake before each use. This is pretty mild in flavor. Most creamers are so heavily seasoned with artificial flavors that it is very easy to taste in very small doses. Hope this helps an you try again 🙂

    2. This is so amazing! I used swerve and heated it on the stove for a few minutes it came out so creamy and yummy. Thank you for the recipe it’s much healthier than the nondairy creamer I was using.

  4. I'm late to the party with this...but this idea came to me the other day and figured hmm I bet someone is thinking and using the same thing!! Can't wait to try! 🙂 🙂

  5. This creamer is out of this world delicious, inammwondering if it is 21 day fix approved?? This creamer for sure will help me quit my addiction to French vanilla coffee creamer but can I use it while on the 21 day fix??

    1. Leslie,

Thanks you! I am not a 21 day Fix expert, but according to my research, the coconut milk and vanilla extract are both approved. It looks like NO sugars. However, this is much better than Vanilla Coffee Creamer. Maybe cut the maple syrup in half and add a splash more vanilla and just use a tad for coffee. Then you would have very, very little actual sugar.

    1. Because canned coconut milk is high in fat, it can go rancid quickly. Your nose will tell you but I mine is always good for 2-3 weeks!

Awesome combo! Definitely going to have to try it! Do you know what the calories, fat and sugars would be per serving by chance? I'd love to know!
    Love coconut! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Cristina, the nutritional values will be dependent on what coconut milk you use. You can enter in name brand ingredients onto myfitnesspal to get an accurate count.
