Whether you use this Homemade Coffee Creamer to make a Homemade Latte, or just to flavor your coffee, this simple dairy-free coffee creamer will save you money and will make drinking your morning cup of coffee that much more enjoyable.

Like many of you, my morning does not go well without a cup of coffee. While I don't like my coffee black, I am not a fan of store-bought creamers for many reasons. They are often loaded with added preservatives, sugar, stabilizers, carrageenan, and even trans fat.

And if you need a dairy-free creamer, your options are limited and they are often pricey!

Skip the store-bought creamer, and with just 3 ingredients and a quick shake, you can quickly make a dairy-free creamer that is rich, velvety, and full of vanilla and coconut flavors with a note of maple in the background. It is the perfect way to indulge without indulging at all.

Notes on Ingredients

Because this homemade coffee creamer is made with only 3 ingredients, you want to choose them wisely for the best results.

  • Coconut Milk: Be sure to use canned coconut milk, not coconut cream for this vegan coffee creamer. My favorite is Trader Joe's Coconut Milk, it is thicker than most light brands but does not separate as much as full-fat coconut milk. However, you can use any brand of light coconut milk or full-fat coconut milk you like.
  • Maple Syrup: Be sure to use pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup, as the flavor will not be as rich or pure.
  • Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract is optional, but adds a nice warming note to the creamer.
  • Optional Additions: Feel free to add up to a teaspoon of ground cinnamon or ½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg for additional flavoring if desired.

How To Prepare & Use Homemade Coffee Creamer

  • Combine the coconut milk, maple syrup, and vanilla extract in a jar with a tight-fitting lid or a blender. Shake or blend well until the ingredients are well emulsified.
  • Store this homemade creamer in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 14 days.
  • Shake well before each use.

not dairy-free?

If you are not dairy-free, feel free to use half and half in place of the coconut milk to make a simple Homemade Vanilla Coffee Creamer.

Total: 3 minutes
Homemade Coffee Creamer being poured into a white coffee mug.
Three simple ingredients come together to create a rich, flavorful, dairy-free coffee creamer.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 ounce) can coconut milk, full-fat or reduced-fat
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a large sealable jar and seal. Shake well for 2-3 minutes, until all the ingredients are well distributed. Alternatively, blend the ingredients until creamy and smooth.
  • Store the creamer in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 14 days. Use as desired, shaking well before each use.

Notes

Coconut Milk: Be sure to use canned coconut milk, not coconut cream or refrigerated coconut milk. My favorite is Trader Joe's Coconut Milk--it is thicker than most light brands but does not separate as much as full-fat coconut milk. Feel free to use any brand of light coconut milk or full-fat coconut milk you like.
Optional Additions: Feel free to add up to 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and/or ½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg for additional flavor. Be sure to give a good shake before using, because coconut milk is so thick it needs to be shaken well to distribute properly.
If you are looking to make a dairy version of homemade Vanilla Coffee Creamer, use half-and-half in place of the coconut milk.

  1. So, the first canned coconut milk I tried ever was GOD AWFUL. However, I would really like to try this recipe, are there any brands you would suggest to stay away from? I'm on a paleo diet for medical reasons, and I REALLY miss my vanilla coffee creamer.

    1. Hi Ani! I love Trader Joe's Brand. I use the light canned coconut milk and it is by far my favorite. I have do not like the Thai brand or refrigerated coconut milks for this recipe. I hope you can find a brand you can enjoy!!

    1. Hi Leila! I just updated to include in notes that the nutritional values are based on 2 tablespoons each.

  2. I used the milk you recommended and followed the recipe exactly, but my creamer was all curdled and wouldn't get smooth.

    1. Jani, I am so sorry this happened. Did you shake up your coconut milk before making creamer? I am going to add to the post to blend it if needed. Sometimes when the temperature of the milk is too hot or too cold it can be harder to emulsifie.

  3. Looks delicious! This recipe, however, is not Whole 30 as it contains both maple syrup and vanilla extract (both not allowed on the Whole 30). I'm still going to give it a try!

    1. Yes, you are ABSOLUTELY correct, this recipe is NOT whole30. I need to update that ASAP. Maple Syrup is Paleo not Whole30 and I completely overlooked that on this post. SO sorry for misleading you.

  4. 5 stars
I had an extra can that I didint need for my banana bread, which came out super moist and yummy. About to move so i had no milk, creamer ect in the house but i had a can of coconut cream. Thanks so much for posting this receipe; so simple and the coffee came out amazingly creamy and delicious. Think ill stick with this instead of buying creamer!! Thanks so much for changing my cup of joe! =o)

    1. Oh Charlotte, this makes me so happy! I have been there in the middle of a move when COFFEE is a must. So glad you found this recipe to save you for the day (and hopefully come back to again and again!!) And good luck on your move!!!

  5. Hi Kristen, I am trying to cut out plastic bags in our home. Would this work the same by maybe blending it for a few minutes?

    1. Hey Laurie! I am confused as to why you think you need plastic bags for this recipe. I place all ingredients in glass jar and shake up or blend with an immersion blender. BUT kuddos to you for cutting back on waste--I love that <3 Enjoy
