Notes On Ingredients
- Quinoa: The method for cooking quinoa using the Instant Pot will work with any color/variety of quinoa you have on hand. It typically can be found as white quinoa, red quinoa, or tri-color.
- Liquid: To cook the quinoa, you can use water, broth, or stock. If using quinoa for meal prep and a variety of dishes, I recommend keeping it simple and using water. To add a bit of flavor, use store-bought or homemade vegetable broth, homemade chicken stock, or Instant Pot chicken stock.
- Seasonings: You can add in whatever seasonings you like when preparing quinoa. I typically opt to just use a pinch of salt, so that I can use the quinoa as desired in a variety of recipes, but feel free to add in taco seasoning, cajun seasoning, or dill seasoning for additional flavor.
Tips for Perfect Instant Pot Quinoa
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the ingredient quantities and detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Tip #1: Rinse Quinoa. It is crucial to rinse your quinoa before cooking it, regardless of the cooking method used. Rinsing removes quinoa's natural coating, called saponin, which can make the quinoa taste bitter. Even if your quinoa states it is pre-rinsed, I would highly recommend placing the quinoa into a fine-mesh strainer and rinsing under cold, running water for at least 2 minutes, or until the water runs clear.

Tip #2: Use a 1:1 Ratio. Cooking quinoa in the pressure cooker requires a 1:1 ratio. Meaning, you use the same ratio of quinoa to liquid. So for 1 cup of quinoa, you would use 1 cup of liquid, for 2 cups of quinoa, use 2 cups of liquid, and so forth.
Tip #3: Let Pressure Release Naturally. Just like when pressure cooking Instant Pot Jasmine Rice and Instant Pot Beans, you need to allow the pressure to release naturally on its own when making Instant Pot Quinoa, as this will ensure your quinoa is perfectly cooked and remains fluffy.
Tip #4: Use a Fork to Fluff. This will help keep the quinoa fluffy and light, verses mushy and dense.

Can you cook this with chicken in it?
Unfortunately, no. Chicken and Quinoa have different cooking times.
I followed the directions, but I got a "burn" message before it got up to full pressure. I did a quick release and some of the quinoa had burned on the bottom. Not sure where I went wrong. It did seem like it was taking quite a bit of time to get up to pressure. Any suggestions?
It sounds like your instant pot lid was not sealed. Maybe the seal on the lid was not on correctly or your vent knob was opened. This should only take a few minutes to reach pressure and if not sealed right, the liquid would evaporate and cause a burn notice.
I love this! Thank you so much.
I make Quinoa “Sausages” and this makes it so much faster.
I added a vegetable stock pot into the water and it came out great.
Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing Rose!
Perfect, just like you said. Quick. Easy. Delish. Just made a great corn succotash with it. Corn, Onion, Pea, grated Carrot, thin-slice Celery, Tomato & other than S&P, a drizzle of Basil Infused Oil & Strawberry Balsamic Vinegar, so good!! Made to go with spicy BBQ Meatballs! Hubby will love it!!
I love your additions!
I cook large amounts of quinoa for my homemade dog food. How much is safe to cook in the 6 quart instant pot at one time? I have tried to find this on the internet to no avail and do not want to mess up my new instant pot!
Hi Allison! I would not fill more than 1/2 full anytime cooking starches. So this recipe can be tripled and you MAY even be able to fit in 4 cups. Just don't fill past the 6 cup mark.
My quinoa in the instapot is always soggy? I do 1 to 1 water to quinoa let it release naturally? Tried 1 to 1 1/2 quinoa to water 🤔
Hi Lee! I am sorry you are having issues. A few tips may help. First, be sure to drain your quinoa well after rinsing. Then use 1:1 measurement and cook for 1 minute. Do a quick release after 10 minutes to see if that helps. Then fluff with a fork--stirring with a spoon will break down the quinoa and potentially make it mushy. Hope that helps!
This is the best recipe for quinoa I've ever used, be it stove top or instant pot. I have an 8 quart pot and put water to the two cup mark, inserted the trivet and put the rinsed quinoa and veggie broth in a bowl sitting on the trivet. When the pot was depressurized the quinoa is already in a bowl ready to go on the table and the pot is a breeze to clean.
YAY! I am so glad you had success with your quinoa. It does make meal prep so easy!
I have never used a bowl in the Instant Pot. I love this idea. So, what kind of bowl? A metal bowl? You add 2 cups of water in the IP, and then follow the 1:1 ratio in the bowl of quinoa/liquid?
Hi Michelle! I will let Phoenix weigh in as well, but I would use a metal heat safe bowl, add in 1.5 cups of cold water to bottom of inner pan, mix 1:1 ratio of quinoa together in dish and then set cook time for 5 minutes--I find that when cooking in a metal pan I have to add a few minutes for things to cook fully. Hope that helps.
If I double recipe do I double cook time
Hi Amanda! No need to double the cook time, just keep in mind it will take a bit longer to come to pressure.
