Homemade Ranch Dressing at a Glance

From drizzling it on salads to dipping fries, ranch is a staple in many American households, and mine is no exception. While store shelves are lined with countless varieties, nothing beats the flavor of homemade ranch!

  • Super Easy Recipe. It takes less than five minutes to whip up homemade ranch dressing.
  • Quality Control. When you make ranch dressing at home, you control the ingredients. That means no added sugar, MSG, or preservatives, just wholesome flavor.
  • Amazing Flavor. Homemade ranch tastes far better than anything from a bottle. It's creamy, tangy, and perfectly seasoned with a blend of dried herbs and spices.

Happy Cooking! xo Kristen

Ingredients in Homemade Ranch Dressing

Ingredients for Ranch Dressing labeled on counter.
  • Greek yogurt (or Mayonnaise): You can use plain Greek yogurt or mayonnaise for this recipe. I tend to opt for yogurt to keep this ranch dressing lower in fat and egg-free.
  • Sour Cream: Use regular or reduced-fat sour cream, NOT fat-free, as the flavor will not be the same.
  • Dried Spices: You can opt to use homemade ranch seasoning, or a combination of dried parsley, dried basil, dried dill, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk gives ranch dressing its signature tanginess. But there is no need to purchase buttermilk just to make ranch dressing. You can simply combine fresh lemon juice with milk to replicate the flavor of buttermilk.

How to Make Homemade Ranch Dressing

It takes less than 5 minutes to whip up this easy ranch dressing recipe. However, I recommend chilling for at least 30 minutes before serving, allowing time for the flavors to meld together.

  1. If needed, prepare homemade buttermilk by combining lemon juice with milk and letting it sit for a few minutes.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise (or yogurt), sour cream, and seasonings until well combined.
  3. Drizzle the buttermilk into the bowl, whisking constantly until everything is well combined and the right consistency is reached.
  4. Place the prepared ranch dressing in an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using.

Easy Homemade Ranch Dressing

Servings: 16
Prep: 5 minutes
Refrigerate: 30 minutes
Total: 35 minutes
Jar of homemade ranch dressing next to dill and lemon.
Homemade Ranch Dressing is an all-natural, tangy, creamy dressing loaded with flavor that comes together in minutes!

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt, or mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • ½ teaspoon dried dill weed
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon basil
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • pinch finely cracked pepper
  • ¼ cup milk, or buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, about 1 fresh lemon (omit if using buttermilk)

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt (or mayonnaise) with ¼ cup sour cream, ½ teaspoon dried dill weed, ½ teaspoon dried parsley, ¼ teaspoon onion powder, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ⅛ teaspoon basil, ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, and pinch finely cracked pepper until well combined.
  • Slowly whisk in ¼ cup milk and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice until well incorporated.
  • Place the dressing in an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using, to allow the flavors time to develop.
  • After 30 minutes serve as desired or store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Shake before each use.

Notes

In place of the dried spices, feel free to use 2 teaspoons of dried Ranch Seasoning
Buttermilk/Milk: If using buttermilk, you can omit the lemon juice. For milk, use any fat percentage of milk you have on hand.
Yogurt: Using yogurt in place of mayonnaise will lower the fat of the dressing and make it egg-free. Be sure to use PLAIN Greek yogurt, not flavored yogurt or regular plain yogurt.
Sour Cream: Use regular or reduced-fat, not fat-free sour cream for best results.

  1. I think your nutritional information is way off. 1/4 tsp of sea salt is 120 mg without counting other ingredients.
This info makes a big difference when you are on a 2000 or less mg of sodium per day diet.

    1. Hi Mary Tyler! The nutritional values are for 1/16 of this recipe. I re-ran the nutritional information, being sure everything added was counted, and it still comes out to 45 grams of sodium per serving. If you use a lot of dressing, you would need to account for that increase. I hope that helps!

You absolutely nailed Ranch seasoning with this recipe! I've been trying for years to find a recipe with which I could make Ranch dip, so I could have that wonderful taste sans the migraine-causing (for me) MSG. And I found it. I mixed the seasonings (followed recipe to a T) with a tub of sour cream and ... wow. Delicious with potato chips. Now anxious to try it in salad dressing.

This is my husband's favorite salad dressing, but I've been lazy and have just buying a bottle at the grocery store. Your recipe was just what I needed. Perfect---so easy and Bill loved it!
