Growing up, Lipton Onion Soup Mix was a pantry staple in my home. My mom used it to add intense flavor to rice pilaf, burgers, and roasted red potatoes. It was the secret ingredient that transformed simple meals into family favorites.

However, while it enhances flavor, store-bought onion soup mix also comes with a dose of sodium, preservatives, sugar, MSG, and gluten.

But don't worry, you don't have to give up that delicious flavor!

You can easily recreate the classic taste of Lipton Dry Onion Soup Mix in minutes using simple spices you likely already have--and leave the preservatives on the shelf!

Dry Onion Soup Mix Ingredients

Spices for dry onion soup in white bowl with text naming each spice.
  • Onion: To pack in A LOT of onion flavor, this recipe calls for both dried onion flakes and onion powder.
  • Garlic Powder: Rounds out the flavor and balances out the onion.
  • Celery Seed: This is not a commonly used spice in most homes and may not be one you typically keep on hand. However, it is necessary to achieve the same flavor found in Lipton Onion Soup Mix. It is also delicious in Shake and Bake Pork Chops, Instant Pot Chicken Gnocchi Soup, and Old Bay as well--so it won't go to waste in your pantry!
  • Dried Parsley: A little bit of dried parsley adds a bit of freshness to the blend.
  • Salt and Pepper: Because this recipe does not call for bouillon, you need to add salt and pepper to enhance the flavors. I recommend kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper for best results.

we are on a low sodium diet and this recipe is perfect. I use herb ox no salt added bullion powder and followed the recipe to the T. We had onion dip for the first time in years. Thank you for posting this recipe.

    1. Hi Tina! I don't typically add it, as it is hard to find one with quality ingredients. Feel free to add 2 teaspoons of your favorite blend to the mix.

    2. I am following a carnavore way of eating which is low carb. I love Lipton Onion soup mix but don't like some of the preservatives and want healthier ingredients. This recipe sounds great but does have carbs. Any way to reduce the carbs?
I would like ways to season meats for flavor but less carbs.
Thank you and God bless. 💕

      1. Hi Brenda! The nutritional information is for the FULL recipe, which is equivalent to two packets, not an individual serving. Given that this recipe contains no added sugar or flour, the carbs are nearly negligible per serving (and come from the dried onion). Per serving (which would be about 16 per recipe), the carb count is less than 1 gram.

    1. For this recipe, I prefer black pepper. White pepper blends in better, but I feel a bit overwhelming in flavor.

  2. Noticed your recipe says 10 grams of sugar. But sugar is not an ingredient. Does this come from the onions (on keto and avoiding sugar)?

    1. Hi Louie, yes this is natural sugars that come from the dried onions. However, the entire batch actually only has 5 grams, not 10. That means for each serving you would have less than .25 grams.
