Kristen's Keys for Making Dinner for Picky Kids

As a mom of two VERY picky eaters, I know how discouraging it is to make dinner only to have a kid reject it before taking a bite.
Over the years, I learned that the dinners that worked best weren't fancy. They were simple, familiar, easy to customize, and flavorful enough that the adults actually wanted to eat them too.
And while I have lots of kid-friendly recipes and family dinner ideas for busy weeknights, here's what I recommend keeping in mind when feeding picky eaters on busy nights.
- Choose meals that require minimal prep. Weeknight dinners aren't the time for a 14-step recipe. The recipes in this collection come together with 15 minutes or less of hands-on prep.
- Use familiar flavors. With picky eaters, familiar usually gets you much farther than fancy. And it is typically easier on the budget too, which is always a win.
- Work for the whole family. A kid-friendly dinner shouldn't mean the adults are stuck eating something bland. These are the recipes my kids enjoyed without leaving the adults wishing they had ordered takeout.

1. Ground Beef Taco Meat Recipe

What kid doesn't love tacos? Start with this simple taco meat recipe, then put the toppings on the table and let everyone assemble their own tacos. My kids were always much more willing to eat dinner when they had some control over what landed on their plate.
2. Baked Chicken Tenders

Kids love these for their crunchy coating and familiar flavor. I usually serve them with baked fries and dipping sauce for my kids, then dice the tenders and serve them (and the fries!) over a salad for my husband and me. It is one of our favorites.
3. Sloppy Joes with From-Scratch Sauce

The sweet and savory sauce over soft buns is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. But if your kids are really picky, omit the bell peppers and onions. Sometimes a small sacrifice makes the biggest difference when it comes to winning over particular eaters (like my son).
4. Homemade Hamburger Helper

All the flavors of the boxed classic without the processed ingredients, and it is nearly as easy to make with a pound of ground meat and some pantry staples. It is often a meal I turn to when the fridge is looking awfully bare. Have an Instant Pot? Try my Instant Pot Hamburger Helper recipe.
5. Instant Pot Sweet and Sour Chicken

If your kids don't like cooked veggies, simply omit the peppers and onions. I love them, so I often pick them off my kids' plates before serving and add them to mine. The rice cooks right along with the chicken, which is exactly the kind of one-pot dinner I want on a busy night.
6. Creamy Cheesy Chicken and Rice

This is my go-to casserole when my family needs comfort, or I need to take a meal to a family with young kids. The from-scratch cheese sauce takes about 10 minutes to prep and makes leftover chicken and rice something you look forward to having on hand.
7. Easy Baked Rotini

This simple pasta bake is loaded with cheese and familiar flavors kids love. But what makes this recipe one I turn to again and again is that it is as easy as mixing 5 ingredients together and baking. No sautéing meat, no complicated prep, no long ingredient list.
8. One Pot Mac and Cheese

This recipe forever ruined my kids for boxed mac and cheese. It is so rich, so creamy, and thankfully, nearly as easy as the boxed variety. Have an Instant Pot? Try out my Instant Pot Mac and Cheese recipe.
9. Crispy Baked Fish Sticks

The crunchy coating and mild flavor are what convinced my two picky eaters, and if I am being honest, myself, to actually eat fish. Start here, and in a few years, your picky eaters may even try, say, Blackened Mahi Mahi (which is now my son's favorite!)
10. Instant Pot Chicken Tacos

Parents, this is one of the easiest dinner recipes! Dump a few ingredients into the Instant Pot and walk away. In under 30 minutes, you can come back to tender chicken that, after shredding, sets you up for another taco-bar-style dinner. And let me repeat, tacos are never a bad idea.
11. Pizza Pasta

Pizza and pasta are a safe bet with most picky eaters, so combining them into one simple bake makes sense. But before assembling, keep in mind what toppings everyone likes. At my house, that means half the bake is cheese only and the other half is loaded with mushrooms, olives, and pepperoni.
12. Crockpot BBQ Chicken Legs

Between the sticky-sweet barbecue flavor and the ability to forgo silverware, you know this dinner is going to be a favorite with the kids! Add in that it is a dump-and-cook recipe with just a handful of ingredients, and you will find yourself turning to this kid-friendly meal again and again!
13. Pizza Meatloaf

This is my mom's meatloaf recipe I grew up not just enjoying, but requesting. She served it with buttered parsley potatoes, and all four of her picky eaters cleaned their plates. Now my family does the same.
14. Homemade Shake and Bake Pork Chops

A crispy breading always seems to help make dinner more appealing, and that proves to be true with these pork chops (and Copycat Shake N'Bake Chicken as well). When my kids were younger, I often asked them to help me "shake" the pork or chicken. Getting them involved with cooking is one way to entice them to try new things.
15. Creamy Chicken and Pasta Casserole

This was another recipe from my childhood. My mom made it whenever she had leftover chicken on hand or needed a meal to take to a family in need. The mild, creamy sauce and tender pasta make this feel familiar, while the chicken keeps it filling.
16. Refried Bean and Rice Burritos

Easy, cheap, and incredibly versatile, these bean burritos are a staple kid-friendly dinner recipe. Delicious with or without rice. I almost always have a batch in my freezer to pull out on busy nights or throw in a lunch box for an easy school lunch.
17. Instant Pot Fettuccine

When my daughter was younger, mac and cheese was her favorite. Now that she is a teen, this is her current #1 dinner request. It is rich, creamy, and one of the easiest dinner recipes ever. Layer everything in the Instant Pot, set the timer, and dinner is done in about 15 minutes.
18. Chicken Bites

Little bites of caramelized chicken ready in 15 minutes! I like serving over a salad for the adults and with a sauce for the kids to dip -- homemade buttermilk ranch works great here. That keeps everyone happy!
19. No-Boil Baked Ravioli

While this recipe starts off by browning meat to make a quick meat sauce, I sometimes skip the meat altogether or simply layer pepperoni into the bake along with the cheese ravioli. That takes the prep down from 15 minutes to about 5, and sometimes, I need those extra 10 minutes.
20. Air Fryer French Bread Pizza

Homemade pizza night the easy way! Grab your favorite toppings and a couple loaves of French bread and let the kids make their own dinner for zero complaints and minimal effort.
The slightly sweet citrus sauce makes this an easy sell with kids who normally shy away from more complicated flavors. It also helps that there are no veggies tossed in with the chicken. When my kids were younger, they would gobble up steamed broccoli on the side, but the minute it is mixed into a dish, they get suspicious.
22. Ham and Cheese Stromboli

Whenever I make this, I think it should be added to my weekly meal plan more often. If I grab pre-made pizza dough, it takes just a few minutes to make and feels far more interesting than a classic ham sandwich.
23. Baked Vegetarian Tostadas

Made with crispy corn tortillas, refried beans, and cheese, these baked tostadas are like a mini taco pizza. It is another great recipe to let your kids help make, or at the very least, pick their own toppings.
24. Crockpot Chili

With mild seasoning and no chunks of bell peppers, this simple chili recipe is perfect for picky eaters. For texture issues, blend the diced tomatoes for even more appeal; I know this from personal experience.😉
25. Chicken Enchilada Casserole

Rather than rolling individual enchiladas, I layer everything into a casserole dish, and dinner just needs to bake while I help the kids with homework. Just be sure to use a mild enchilada sauce so the spice level is just right for the kids!
26. Crockpot BBQ Pulled Chicken

With tender shredded chicken breasts cooked in a sweet and savory spice rub and then finished with BBQ sauce, this one always goes down without complaint. Serve plain, on buns, or use for another favorite, homemade BBQ pizza.
