Packing lunches is a task most parents dread. Between finding the time and creating meals that are tasty, nutritious, and easy to pack (day after day after day), it's no wonder making kid-friendly lunches can feel overwhelming.

100+ Quick Lunch Ideas for Kids

Whether starting with my printable list to mix and match proteins, grains, fruits, and veggies or using the following ideas to inspire you, you can craft over 100 easy lunches for kids! Feel free to make each idea your own.

  • Cheese & Crackers: Pairing sliced cheese with crackers and fruit and veggies is is so much more affordable than purchasing a pre-made lunchable. Not to mention, you can use items with less processed ingredients.
  • Bean Burritos: Make a big batch of homemade bean burritos and stash them in the freezer. Thow one in a lunchbox with ice pack along with some fruit, and it will thaw perfectly by lunch.
  • Pizza Bento Box: Pack a small amount of pizza sauce and shredded cheese with an English muffin or pita for make your own pizza lunchable.

  • Mini Pizzas: Instead of a DIY pizza, you can make a large batch of English Muffins Pizzas or Air Fryer Bagel Pizzas and use them to make quick work of packing school lunches.
  • Southwestern Veggie Tostadas: This baked tostada is like a mini Mexican Pizza and is so fun for kids to make and eat! It checks off a whole grain from the tortilla, vegetables from the toppings, and protein from the refried beans. Serve with a side of fruit for a lunch that is perfectly balanced.
  • Copycat Starbucks Protein Bistro Box: Pair hard-boiled eggs (sliced and seasoned!) with grapes, apple slices, nut butter, and some pretzels (or a whole wheat applesauce muffin).

  • Hummus Snack Box: Pack a small container of hummus with veggies and pita chips, plus strawberries (or another fruit) and almonds.
  • Healthy Quesadillas: This is not your average quesadilla recipe. This cheese quesadillas has sneaky veggies and the KIDS love it! Serve with guacamole or sour cream and fresh fruit.
  • Ham & Cheese Roll-Ups: Skip the bread and wrap deli meat with sliced cheese for tasty non-sandwich school lunch. Pair with pretzels, fresh cherries, and a homemade go-gurt for a simple lunch.

  • Think Outside the Bun. Serve lunch meat and cheese on the side of a whole grain muffin or quick bread, like Chocolate Zucchini Muffins, Peanut Butter Banana Muffins, or Zucchini Bread. Add a side of yogurt with homemade granola and strawberries and a side of grapes.
  • Leftover Nuggets. Whether you have leftover chicken tenders or chicken nuggets on hand, they make a perfect non-sandwich lunch for kids. Add a dipping sauce and finish with fresh fruit and vegetables. This is another easy, kid-favorite lunch.
  • Turkey Club Wrap: These turkey wraps are easy to make and tasty to eat! Pair with berries and snap pea crisps.

  • Veggie Wrap: What kid does not like to dip their veggies into ranch dressing? This easy Veggie Wrap puts the veggies and ranch right into a handheld wrap. Pair with berries and snap pea crisps.
  • Breakfast for Lunch: Spread leftover pancakes (whole wheat or gluten-free) with nut butter and chia jam and serve alongside yogurt and fruit.
  • Nacho Lunchable. Pair tortilla chips with lettuce, refried beans, black beans and/or, leftover taco meat, tomatoes, and cheese. And some fruit and a cup of salsa, sour cream, or guacamole on the side if desired and this is sure to be a favorite! Time Saving Tip: This is a great lunch to prep after you enjoy tacos for dinner.

  • Leftovers. Never underestimate the power of leftovers when it comes to packing a school lunch. Pack a thermos with leftover soup, pasta salad, chili, or casserole. Some of my kid's favorites are Instant Pot mac and cheesetortellini soupcheesy chicken and rice, and Thai noodles.
  • Meatballs or Chicken Sausage. Serve precooked, sliced Italian chicken sausage or Italian baked meatballs on a stick with a side of pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce for dipping. Pack alongside veggies and fruit of choice.
  • Butterfly Snack Bags. Fun, customizable, and depending on what you use to make them, they can stand alone as a completely balanced meal. Shown below are snack bags prepared with grapes, peanut butter crackers, and a cheese stick.

Tips for Packing School Lunches

After 20+ years of packing lunches, here are my sanity-saving tips that help ensure kids actually enjoy what's inside their lunch box.

  • Let kids help. When given options, kids are more likely to eat what they pack. Even if it's on the healthier side.
  • Use my FREE Lunchbox Planner. Have your child pick a protein, grain, fruit, and vegetable to mix and match into 100+ balanced lunches.
  • Pack lunch right after dinner. Use leftovers, clean up once, and eliminate morning stress.
  • Choose whole grains. Whole wheat bread, brown rice, or whole grain muffins keep kids fuller and add fiber.
  • Adjust portions. Consider age, appetite, and activity level.
  • Watch for restrictions. Respect food allergies and school rules. (I have a list of nut-free lunch ideas and gluten-free lunch ideas to help!)
  • Make it fun. Use cookie cutters for sandwiches or cheese slices. (High schoolers may roll their eyes. Ask me how I know.)
